Texas Holdem Definitions
All in: When a player
chooses to bet his last remaining chips (he can never win more than he risks
from the remaining players).
Ante: Money placed in the pot by all players before the hand is
dealt.
Bad Beat: When a hand is lost with a hand that usually would win.
Big Blind: A full forced bet before any cards are dealt. The
amount of the big blind also represents the minimum bet allowed.
Bluff: A bet with a weak hand, usually with the intention of making
the other players fold.
Board: The cards used by all the players. Also known as
community cards.
Button: A disk that is used to show who the theoretical dealer is.
Buy in: The amount of money it requires to get into a game. It is the
money available to bet in the game.
Call: Making a bet equal to the previous bet.
Calling Station: A player who always seems to call and rarely folds.
Catch: When a draw makes a hand, usually meant as a card which makes
a straight or flush.
Check: When you do not bet on one's turn to bet.
Check Raise: A player checks on the first opportunity to bet then
raises on his next opportunity.
Cold Call: Calling a bet and raise at the same time after first
checking, or betting for the first time.
Donkey: A slang term for a bad player (also known as a Donk).
Early Position: Being in an early betting position, usually 1 to 3
places to the left of the Dealer or Button.
Family Pot: Where everyone at the table is still involved in the pot.
Flop: The first 3 community cards dealt at once in a game.
Fold: To give up your cards and remove yourself from play of the
hand.

Free Card: You get to see an additional card without having to call
or bet.
Heads Up: One on one play, where only two players are involved.
Hole Cards: The 2 cards in each players hand unseen by the other
players.
Kicker: A separate high card used to break a tie.
Late Position: Being among the last to act in a round of betting,
usually 1 to 3 places to the right of the Dealer or Button..
Loose Player: A player who plays a lot of hands, good and bad.
Monster: A powerful hand.
Muck: Fold without showing your hand.
No Limit: A game where anyone can bet all their chips at anytime.
Nuts: The highest possible hand in a poker game.
Overcard: A card on the board higher than your pair.
Pair: Two cards of the same rank.
Position: The place of a player at the table in relation to the
Dealer. Positions can be early, middle or late.
Pot: The total money or chips on the table after all the betting is
complete.
Pot Limit: A game where a player's maximum bet is the size of the
pot.
Pot Odds: The calculated odds that the money in the pot represents in
relation to how much it will cost to play the hand and the players chances
of winning the hand. Note: this is a confusing but very important
aspect of play, so a further explanation is in order. A simple
example: you have 4 cards to a flush with one card left. Therefore,
you roughly have a 4 to 1 chance of getting the card to make your flush.
If the pot is $10, and the player before you bets $5, then you will only get
a 2 to 1 return on your money if you call and win. In this scenario
the pot odds do not favor you. Pot Odds are not only important in
deciding whether to call, but also how much to bet. If you are up
against a player you suspect is on a draw, then you need to bet enough to
make his Pot Odds unfavorable to him.
Rag: A card that helps no ones hand.
Rake: The money the house takes on each hand.
Raise: When you increase the amount of a bet after someone has
already bet.
River: The last or 5th community card dealt.
Rock: A player who only plays extremely good hands.
Showdown: The showing of cards after the last bet has been made and
all cards have been dealt.
Side Pot: A second pot formed when a player is all in. The side pot
holds money the “all in” player can’t win.
Slow Play: Not raising a good hand to incite further betting.
Small Blind: Forced half bet made before any cards are dealt.
Spit Pot: Hands in which the pot is split between more than one
player.
Steal: Raising in expectation that all other players will fold.
Tells: Gestures or words by a player that give away the value of
his/her hand.
Tight: A tight player is a player who never bets unless they hold a
good hand.
Turn: The 4th or next to last community card. Play Online Poker |
